Your turn

1. Roll: roll six dice up to three times, setting aside any you like between rolls. 2. Resolve: three of a number scores that many ★, +1 for each extra die of that number. Each ϟ gives 1 energy. Each ♥ heals 1, but not in Kyoto. Each ✸ smashes: from outside Kyoto it hits the monsters in Kyoto; from inside it hits every monster outside. 3. Enter Kyoto: if Kyoto City is empty you must enter it (+1★). 4. Buy Power cards. 5. End of turn.

Kyoto

Starting your turn in Kyoto scores 2★. A monster in Kyoto that loses ♥ to another monster’s ✸ may yield, and the attacker then takes its place. With five or six monsters, Kyoto Bay is a second seat; it closes when four or fewer remain.

Power cards

Three cards are face up at Nishiki Market. Buy any you can afford, or pay 2ϟ to sweep all three and reveal new ones. Keep cards stay in front of you; Discard cards resolve at once.

Keep cards

  • Acid Attack (6ϟ) — Add ✸ to your Roll.
  • Alien Origin (3ϟ) — Buying cards costs you 1 less ϟ.
  • Alpha Monster (5ϟ) — Gain 1★ when you roll at least ✸.

  • Background Dweller (4ϟ) — You can always reroll any 3 you have.
  • Burrowing (5ϟ) — Add ✸ to your Roll while you are in Kyoto. When you Yield Kyoto, the monster taking it loses 1♥.
  • Camouflage (3ϟ) — If you lose ♥, roll a die for each ♥ you lost. Each ♥ result reduces the loss by 1♥.
  • Complete Destruction (3ϟ) — If you roll 1 2 3 ♥ ✸ ϟ gain 9★ in addition to the regular effects.
  • Media-Friendly (3ϟ) — Gain 1★ whenever you buy a Power card.

  • Energy Hoarder (3ϟ) — You gain 1★ for every 6ϟ you have at the end of your turn.

  • Extra Head (7ϟ, ×2) — You get 1 extra die.
  • Fire Breathing (4ϟ) — When you roll at least ✸, your neighbor(s) at the table lose 1 extra ♥.

  • Friend of Children (3ϟ) — When you gain any ϟ gain 1 extra ϟ.
  • Giant Brain (5ϟ) — You have 1 extra die Roll each turn.
  • Gourmet (4ϟ) — When you roll at least 1 1 1 gain 2 extra ★ in addition to the regular effects.

  • Herd Culler (3ϟ) — You can change one of your dice to a 1 each turn.

  • Jets (5ϟ) — You don’t lose ♥ if you decide to Yield Kyoto.
  • Made in a Lab (2ϟ) — During the Buy Power cards step, you can peek at the top card of the deck and buy it or put it back on top of the deck.
  • Metamorph (3ϟ) — At the end of your turn you can discard any keep cards you have to gain their full cost in ϟ.
  • Mimic (8ϟ) — Choose a keep card any monster has in play and put a Mimic token on it. This card counts as a duplicate of that card as if you had just bought it. Spend 1ϟ at the start of your turn to move the Mimic token and change the card you are mimicking.
  • Battery Monster (3ϟ) — When you buy Battery Monster, put 6ϟ on it from the bank. At the start of your turn take 2ϟ off and add them to your pool. When there are no ϟ left discard this card.

  • Detritivore (4ϟ) — When you roll at least 1 2 3, gain 2★, in addition to the regular effects.
  • Opportunist (3ϟ) — Whenever a Power card is revealed you have the option of buying it immediately.
  • Parasitic Tentacles (4ϟ) — You can buy Power cards from other monsters. Pay them the ϟ cost.
  • Plot Twist (3ϟ) — Before resolving your dice, you may change one die to any result. Discard when used.
  • Poison Quills (3ϟ) — When you roll at least 2 2 2 or more, add ✸✸ to your Roll.
  • Poison Spit (4ϟ) — Give one Poison token to each Monster you Smash with your ✸. At the end of their turn, Monsters lose 1♥ for each Poison token they have on them. A Poison token can be discarded by using a ♥ instead of gaining 1♥.
  • Psychic Probe (3ϟ) — You can reroll a die of your choice after the last Roll of each other Monster. If the result of your reroll is ♥, discard this card.
  • Rapid Healing (3ϟ) — Spend 2ϟ at any time to gain 1♥. This may be used to prevent your health from being reduced to 0.
  • Regeneration (4ϟ) — When you gain ♥, you gain 1 extra ♥.
  • Rooting for the Underdog (3ϟ) — At the end of your turn, if you have the fewest ★, gain 1★.
  • Shrink Ray (6ϟ) — Give 1 Shrink Ray token to each Monster you Smash with your ✸. At the beginning of their turn, Monsters roll 1 less die for each Shrink Ray token they have on them. A Shrink Ray token can be discarded by using a ♥ instead of gaining 1♥.
  • Smoke Cloud (4ϟ) — Place 3 Smoke counters on this card. Spend 1 Smoke counter for an extra Roll. Discard this card when all Smoke counters are spent.
  • Solar Powered (2ϟ) — At the end of your turn gain 1ϟ if you have no ϟ.
  • Spiked Tail (5ϟ) — If you roll at least one ✸, add ✸ to your Roll.
  • Stretchy (3ϟ) — Before resolving your dice, you can spend 2ϟ to change one of your dice to any result.
  • Energy Drink (4ϟ) — Spend 1ϟ to get 1 extra die Roll.

  • Wings (6ϟ) — Spend 2ϟ to not lose ♥ this turn.

Discard cards

  • Apartment Building (5ϟ) — +3★.
  • Commuter Train (4ϟ) — +2★.
  • Corner Store (3ϟ) — +1★.
  • Death From Above (5ϟ) — +2★ and take control of Kyoto if you don’t already control it. All other Monsters must Yield Kyoto. Edition ruling: Taking control places you in Kyoto City and scores the usual 1★ for entering, as the rulebook awards for every entry.
  • Energize (8ϟ) — +9ϟ.
  • Evacuation Orders (7ϟ, ×2) — All other Monsters lose 5★.
  • Flame Thrower (3ϟ) — All other Monsters lose 2♥.
  • Frenzy (7ϟ) — Take another turn after this one.
  • Gas Refinery (6ϟ) — +2★ and all other Monsters lose 3♥.
  • Heal (3ϟ) — +2♥.
  • High Altitude Bombing (4ϟ) — All Monsters (including you) lose 3♥.
  • Jet Fighters (5ϟ) — +5★ −4♥.
  • National Guard (3ϟ) — +2★ −2♥.
  • Nuclear Power Plant (6ϟ) — +2★ +3♥.
  • Skyscraper (6ϟ) — +4★.
  • Tank (4ϟ) — +4★ −3♥.
  • Vast Storm (6ϟ) — +2★ and all other Monsters lose 1ϟ for every 2ϟ they have.

Edition rulings

  • Turn order: a random monster goes first. The rulebook’s smash roll-off picks every monster with equal chance, so the result is the same.
  • Yield decisions come before damage is reduced or prevented, so Jets can cancel the loss; Armor Plating, Camouflage, Wings and Rapid Healing then apply.
  • Herd Culler, Plot Twist and Stretchy change dice after your last Roll and after any Psychic Probe rerolls, immediately before you resolve.
  • Battery Monster’s 2ϟ each turn are moved, not newly gained, so Friend of Children does not add to them.
  • Mimic copies counters (Smoke Cloud, Battery Monster) with its own set. When a mimicked counter card runs out, the Mimic token comes off and can be placed again at the start of a turn.
  • Parasitic Tentacles pays the owner the price you pay after Alien Origin.
